If content moderators ensure the public’s safety, who is ensuring theirs?

Britney: a champion of truth, justice, and healing.

______________

Britney calls for social media companies to implement organizational reforms that prioritize safety, well-being, and accountability. In particular, she accuses social media companies of neglecting to establish safety infrastructure for content moderators harmed by repetitive graphic content viewing.

In 2019, Britney joined the Public Relations Escalations team (PR-ESC) at Facebook, a highly specialized community global operations team that supported Mark Zuckerberg’s executive, public policy, legal and communications teams. Her team's primary focus was to provide real-time assistance during live crises and ensure public safety while minimizing risk and harm to people and communities using Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger products.

In this role, Britney oversaw global incidents, exposing her to the most devastating content. Her passion for inciting change and advocating for traumatized content moderators started with her own Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnosis as a result of performing her role.

By sharing her story, she hopes to raise awareness about the dangers of exposing employees to explicit content without proper resources, support, and safeguards. She considers this a global humanitarian crisis that must be addressed.

Britney holds a Spanish Literature and Language degree from the University of California, Irvine. Her previous work at Google and Time Warner Cable included creating organizational infrastructure, scalable solutions, people leadership, and policy enforcement.
